5W and fractions! The following text comes from the Think Math Family letter:
Students will approach fractions in two ways throughout the chapter. • Fractions represent the operations of multiplication and division. For example, to find 3/4 of 20, you can either multiply 20 by 3 and then divide the product by 4 or divide 20 by 4 and then multiply the quotient by 3. Either way, the result is 15.
• Fractions represent numbers that can be shown, like every other number, on a number line. There are many ways of representing the same number. For example, 1/5is equivalent to 2/10, 3/15 and 0.2.
• A fraction greater than 1 can be represented as a fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator or as a mixed number.
